Hi, I'm Bonnie

I tried yoga for the first time 22 years ago. Being a fitness instructor for 15 years, I just wanted something to “cool my jets,” and to be honest, the first few yoga classes that I attended I found to be incredibly boring. But still, I kept going back, always rolling up my mat early and skipping the relaxation/meditation part. I really had no desire to be still and be alone with my thoughts, though eventually I realized that the slow down was what I needed the most in my life. I needed to slow down, to make time for stillness and INVITE the sweet whisper of my Creator and completely surrender to His grace.

That’s when things got messy. And messy — messy is good. Messy is where the magic happens. It’s in this void, this emptiness where we realize that we are broken. And in this state of brokenness, we can either reach for our Creator (or in some cases, let Him reach for us) or we can deny Him.

I’ve done both.

These video clips were taken about a month ago, and I just got around to piecing them all together 🙃 (The kitties are a bit bigger now and not confined to the shop anymore)

I love looking back on archives & maybe I'll get better at posting random things, if nothing else, then for this purpose.

Lifes a journey and meant to be enjoyed, shared, and remembered🌻

Little life update:

It was over 10 years ago that I had this "crazy" idea of opening a Christ-centered yoga studio.
Well, it turns out, it wasn't so crazy after-all, as this was something so desperately needed in the Lincoln community.

After 10 amazing years, the time has come for me to pass on the reins of ownership of Studio 4:8 Yoga to my dear friend Brenda Kester.

This decision was not made lightly, but after almost 2 years of soul searching and reflection. It was time to let go (Aparigraha), to simplify, and allow her to bring in new energy to this sweet little space.

I realized during this time that I needed to schedule more time for things to light me up, make me feel restored while I filled more LIFE into my days instead of adding to to my "to do" list that running a business inevitably does.

With that being said, I will still very much be involved with this community, just in a different capacity.
Running trainings...
Facilitating workshops and retreats...
And finding my way back in the teachers (& student) seat.
Things that set my soul on 🔥

It's been an honor ya'll.
All of your support & prayers through the years has been immensely appreciated.

I'm excited to dip my toes in retirement, and move forward in this new ebb and flow of an unhurried life.

Yoga Teacher training complete.

Time to once again be a student.

Here we are.
The ...ending of a 200-hour certification... but it's really the beginning of yet another yoga teacher/student training.

My goal with this amazing group that I had the opportunity to work with, is they find this practice of Yoga linear.
Whether their goal was: healing, curiousty, learning, teaching ... whatever.

A yoga practice or a yoga practitioner should never be boxed into the saying "you're really at good yoga"

What? What does that mean exactly?
Can you do all the asanas perfectly? Is that yoga?
No.
That's asana. And that's only a small part of the yoga practice.

My desire is that the students we taught can look past the word yoga.
And We can experience this pose in our body..

Translation out into the world?
How can we share the light from our Creator?
How can we use our gifts to glorify Him?
On the mat.
Off the mat.
This is the goal of yoga.

Honored and a little sad to see it end for now...excited to see where we end up on the other side.

Finished up the 1st weekend of @studio48yoga Christ-centered yoga teacher training.

My absolute favorite thing to teach is the 8- limbs of Yoga through a Biblical & Christian lense.
This 8-fold path of yoga sure hits different with Jesus at the center. ✝️

I'm honored to do what I do. It's my hope that these yoga teachings we pass on to others always bring glory to our Creator.

96 years ago today, this beautiful human was born IN THIS VERY house.
We were honored that her niece brought her by today to celebrate not only her birthday but for her to see the renovation of her family home that her parents built in 1925.

She hugged me, told stories, and thanked me for not tearing it down to build something "newer"

The imprints run deep in the bones of this house.
These bones have a history of love, family, meals, piano, music, and hard work.

Honored to continue its legacy.

We took a week off to celebrate:
-14 years of marriage 💛
-Turning 50 💃🏻
-Our next stage in life at our new/old home ��🏡

While we had an amazing time together, relaxing, exploring, swimming, eating...
Truth be told, we got homesick, and we were both ready to come home to our life.

We've been settling in quite nicely over here. I recently turned 50 (💃🏻), had all my babies home, (🐥🐥🐥) threw a big party with 4 bands and all my favorite people, sang some Johnny Cash with my pops and my friend since birth @theleebowes (💫) learned a new trade operating a skidloader (😆), found out I'm really good at growing sweet corn 🌽 and getting ready to launch another yoga teacher training group. (🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️)
Whew! It all sounds busy, but the majority of my evenings I spend on the porch just taking it all in.
God is good, and
Home really is the nicest word there is.

Let's talk about this damn cat.

Those who know me, know I am 1000% not a cat person.
However, my best friend made up for my lack of loving the feline creatures.
She'd always jokingly say " If I die before you, I'm going to come back and haunt you as a cat"

Well...here we are.
While this cat isn't haunting me by any means (although his name suggests otherwise) I do believe in signs from above.

I believe Vick sent me this cat to transition being here, and not having her physically with me.

Damn...We had so many plans. 🍅 🥒 🌽 🌱

So this cat.
It comes get me every evening and we go for a walk.
During this time I pray my prayers of gratitude.
Gratitude for signs from above and memories that can never be erased.

One year ago we said "yes" with shaky voices and an overwhelming amount of uncertainty.

Has it been easy?
Hell, NO.
Has it been worth it?
Absofreakinglutely.

I'm a firm believer that the best things in life come from shaky voices that say "yes", hard work, and massive amounts of uncertainty.

What I've realized the last year, is that life isn't about a big "reveal" (I've seen way too many episodes of fixer upper I guess 🙄)

It's about the small non- highlight moments that lead up to... well nothing.
Maybe there is no plateau.

Maybe there is no "We made it!! We are done!!"

At least not on this side of Glory.

Maybe we are here enjoying one small non-highlight moment at a time, and appreciating all those that share in our journey with us.

As I've navigated through the renovation of a 100 year old house, I've come to realize how difficult it is to let go of my old one. This move marks my 23rd in life, but it's different this time. I've lived in this house for a record-breaking 15 years, which means that tears, laughter, anger, comfort, and growth have all left their mark on its bones. While I prepare to hand over the keys to a new family, I'm settling and shifting to my lovely farmhouse and how it too has gone through similar transitions. So now, as I try to make this old house a home, I'm also practicing Aparigraha - the act of non-greed and non-attachment in Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga. A simple reminder to be patient, to settle in, and to live my yoga off the mat.

“Pick one room and make it yours. Go slowly through the house. Be polite, introduce yourself so it can introduce itself to you.”

Sneak peaks...yep, we are still here.
And tired AF.
A week of temporary fencing for the 🐶,
A cat that I swear Vickie sent to me (I'm so not a cat person, but dang...Spooky is like a dog...🥺)
Shelving...
Floors...
Pantry of my dreams...
This time next week we will have a caravan of family helping us load all our memories and we will have a new residence to make our forever home.

(Prayers for my belly as our kitchen is packed up and we will be eating out and take out the next week 😑)

And just like that, I quit my drywalling job.

Maybe as a yoga teacher, we need to be focusing less on a "peak pose" and instead focus on a "peak experience"

In the past, whenever I rolled out my mat, I was always hyper focused on this peak pose.
Not realizing I was skipping over the most important part of Yoga;
The experience.
Breathwork.
Body work.
Mind work.
Prayer.
You know, the 'innards,' the sometimes messy/icky work...
Where we stop the asana practice,
find ourselves in child pose, and finally connect to ourselves through our breath.
We hang on, we struggle to let go, but eventually the breath guides us to the non-clenching of our hands and inevitably our minds.
It's then, and only then we truly understand the meaning of this practice.
It's not a peak performance.
It's not a peak pose.
It's about us…letting go.
It's about our sacred time with God.
Rolling out our mat and showing up.
And if that means stopping mid practice to just b r e a t h e ,
Then... you've reached your peak experience.

I challenge all teachers to encourage this for our students and maybe show up authentically for ourselves, to experience this as well.
